Rare-earth-free, multi-phase smart motors draw major interest from global automotive OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers in Hannover.
HANNOVER, Germany – September 21, 2026 — Quanten Technologies Inc., a developer of high-performance electric motors and drives, has successfully concluded its exhibition and attracted strong interest at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Germany. As one of the five finalists for the IAA Startup Award which honors exceptional innovations and young companies driving the transformation of automotive and mobility industry, Quanten engaged throughout the week with hundreds of automotive engineers and Tier-1 suppliers, showcasing its groundbreaking high performance smart multi-phase motors with no or significantly reduced rare-earth material.

Central to Quanten’s recognition as an IAA Startup Award finalist is its proprietary dynamic reconfiguration technology, which actively adapts the motor’s magnetic structure in real time to optimize operating conditions while enabling seamless fault-tolerant operation. Driven by advanced multi-harmonic control algorithms in a true multi-phase architecture, Quanten’s smart multi-phase motors achieve up to a 30% reduction in weight and a 50% increase in output torque compared to conventional three-phase alternatives.

“The key to reducing automotive industry’s dependence on rare-earth materials is our smart multi-phase architecture,” said Ted Mao, Product Director at Quanten Technologies. “Conventional three-phase systems force OEMs into severe compromises on efficiency, weight, and thermal performance when trying to eliminate rare-earth materials from the motors. Our smart multi-phase motors technology, exemplified by the nine-phase and seven-phase motors presented at this IAA Expo, closes that gap entirely.”
Quanten’s products directly tackled two of the automotive industry’s most critical challenges: volatile critical-material supply chains and high-consequence powertrain failure. Over the course of the event, Quanten highlighted its rare-earth-free and rare-earth-lite lineup across multiple product sectors, from drones to passenger vehicles to commercial vehicles, and how multi-phase architecture allows manufacturers to add drive redundancy at low cost and enables cost-effective drive systems for safety-critical applications such as autonomous cars and trucks, industrial drones and boats.
"The industry response at IAA Transportation Expo confirmed that transportation electrification has entered a pragmatic new chapter focusing on performance, cost-effectiveness and system values," added Ted Mao. "OEMs and fleet directors are actively looking for scalable alternatives to rare earth material dependent supply chains that do not force tradeoffs in vehicle performance. Delivering a 30% weight reduction and 50% increase in output torque resonated strongly with the engineering teams and supply chain leaders we met in Hannover."
